FILMMAKER Leila Doolan has backed Independent candidate Sheila Garrity as the successor to former Galway West TD Catherine Connolly, saying if Ms Garrity were to be elected in the forthcoming bye-election, she would continue the politics espoused by Catherine Connolly.

Ms Doolan made her comments during a panel discussing following the screen of the film Mad, Bad and Dangerous in the Town Hall Theater Monday evening.

In response, Garrity spoke of the legacies left by trailblazing women activists in Ireland, in particular Margaretta D’Arcy, the subject of Monday night’s film, and Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, who was also on the panel.

Sheila Garrity spoke of how she had been drawn to many campaigns and causes of the years, explaining that this was something she had to do. She described it as being like breathing.

Mad, Bad and Dangerous, part of a series focusing on activist women over the age of 70, was directed by Emma O’Grady and featuring Margaretta D’Arcy in conversation with Leila Doolan. The screening was a fundraising evening for the Activist Solidarity Fund, which support activists advocating for Ireland to uphold its neutrality.
